At a sanctuary on Ngamba Island, Uganda, researchers gave chimpanzees a task that could only be solved in pairs: a food platform rigged with a single rope threaded through metal loops, so that pulling one end alone just slides the rope out. The chimpanzees solved it. They understood when they needed help, opened a door to let a partner in, and even learned to recruit the partner who had proven most skilled. But the moment the food arrived in one pile that a dominant animal could monopolize, cooperation collapsed. Chimpanzees collaborate, the study showed, only as long as it pays each of them alone (Melis, Hare & Tomasello, 2006a, 2006b).
The human difference is so ordinary that we walk past it every day.
A commuter helps a stranger lift a stroller onto the train. A lost tourist asks for directions and a local stops, points, gestures, tries another language, investing real effort to help someone they will never see again, for zero reward. We do a hundred things like this every day. No chimpanzee, anywhere, ever, does anything like it.
What does that difference mean for you?
Your potential is not a private treasure waiting to be unlocked in isolation. It is something that emerges between you and the people around you, and even between the different parts of yourself. We will look at the science of why cooperation, not competition, is our real biological signature. Then at how modern performance culture quietly pulls us back toward the older strategy. And finally at what it takes to switch back, on three levels: with others, within yourself, and toward a purpose bigger than both.
Clever, self-aware, and out for themselves
Let’s be fair to the chimpanzees: they are brilliant. They recognize themselves in mirrors (Gallup, 1970). They deceive each other strategically. They form alliances, track who owes what to whom, reconcile after fights, and appear to attribute at least some mental states to others. They know, to a degree, what another chimp can and cannot see.
Primatologists have a name for this: Machiavellian intelligence. The hypothesis, developed by Richard Byrne and Andrew Whiten in the 1980s, proposes that primate intelligence evolved in the first place as social intelligence, an escalating contest of predicting, and outplaying others. And that word, Machiavellian, is precise. A chimpanzee that understands what a rival knows uses that understanding to steal food more effectively. A chimpanzee that grasps social dynamics uses that grasp to climb the hierarchy, secure mating opportunities, defend status. All that magnificent social cognition is pointed at one target: the self.
This is what makes the human case so strange. On paper, the cognitive gap between a chimpanzee and a human two-year-old is not enormous. Both solve physical problems, use tools, learn from others. The developmental psychologist Michael Tomasello spent decades running parallel experiments with apes and young children to isolate what actually differs, and his answer is beautifully small. It is not raw intelligence. It is what he calls shared intentionality (Tomasello et al., 2005): the capacity, and more importantly the motivation, to form a “we.” To hold a goal together.
A human toddler who watches an adult struggle to open a cabinet will walk over and help: unprompted, unrewarded, at fourteen months of age (Warneken & Tomasello, 2007). Two children playing a game will re-engage a partner who stops, because the game only exists as a joint project. Put a chimpanzee in the same situation and, most of the time, nothing happens. The famous observation attributed to Tomasello captures it in one line: you will never see two chimpanzees carrying a log together.
The reversal: we did not learn to cooperate. We were built that way.
Most of us carry around a story that goes like this: deep down, human nature is competitive. Survival of the fittest, everyone for themselves. Cooperation, in this story, is something we add later. A moral achievement, taught by parents and schools, that keeps our selfish instincts in check. Scratch the civilized surface, the story warns, and you will find the beast.
The evolutionary evidence tells the opposite story. Cooperation is not a polite habit layered on top of our nature. Cooperation is our nature. It is the trait our species was built on, the very thing that separated us from the other apes.
Everything that makes us recognizably human is a cooperation technology. Language exists only because speakers trust that words are used to inform rather than merely manipulate. It is, in Tomasello’s terms, an act of shared intentionality performed thousands of times a day. Teaching, deliberately transferring knowledge to someone at your own expense of time and energy, is so natural to humans that we do it compulsively with anyone who will listen, while active teaching in other apes is somewhere between vanishingly rare and nonexistent. Culture itself, the accumulation of improvements across generations that no individual could invent alone, is cooperation extended through time. We did not become the dominant species on this planet because we were the smartest primates individually. We won because we were the only ones who could genuinely pool minds.
Here is the point the chimpanzees make for us. What separates them from us is not intelligence pointed at the self, since that they have in abundance. It is intelligence pointed at a we.
The modern paradox: sliding back without noticing
Now, here is something worth observing with curiosity rather than blame.
Nobody ever sat us down and taught us to see the people around us as rivals. And yet somewhere along the way, many of us absorbed exactly that. A colleague becomes a benchmark. A peer's success stings a little. We guard the unfinished idea, leave the revealing question unasked, and keep a private scoreboard nobody knows about. None of this makes anyone a bad person. It is simply the older strategy, the Machiavellian one, and cultures built around individual performance and individual success make it remarkably easy to slip into. Under enough pressure, the ancient program is always one step away.
The interesting part is what happens to us when we run it at scale, because our biology keeps score. In 2023, the U.S. Surgeon General issued a formal advisory declaring loneliness and isolation an epidemic, a public health crisis whose mortality impact he compared to smoking up to fifteen cigarettes a day. Research led by psychologist Julianne Holt-Lunstad, who advised that report, had already shown that weak social connection predicts early death more strongly than obesity or physical inactivity (Holt-Lunstad, Smith & Layton, 2010). And researchers studying the phenomenon keep finding the same pattern: the more a culture emphasizes competition and self-reliance, the lonelier its people report feeling (Barreto et al., 2021). It is a pattern worth noticing, not an accusation. A species built for connection, living in ways that make connection optional, feels the gap.
Burnout belongs in the same picture. We tend to treat burnout as a calendar problem. Look closer at what it actually feels like: everything depends on you, asking for help would count as failure, resting means losing ground, and every person around you is either competing or evaluating. None of that is a scheduling issue. It is the exhaustion of an animal running the wrong species' strategy, Machiavellian software on cooperative hardware. The hardware was designed for shared load, shared meaning, shared goals. Run it alone and in competition long enough and it does not just slow down. It gives out.
A question of perception
So here is where this stops being anthropology and becomes personal.
Both strategies, the chimpanzee’s and the sapiens’, are available to each of us, every day. Which one we run is decided by something surprisingly simple: how we perceive the people around us.
Look at a colleague and see a competitor, and the nervous system quietly loads the chimpanzee program: guard, compare, withhold, perform. Look at the same colleague and see a potential collaborator, someone with whom a “we” could exist, and it loads the other program: share, ask, build, teach. Same person. Same situation. Two entirely different evolutionary strategies, selected by an act of perception that takes half a second and usually happens below awareness.
And that is quietly good news. If perception selects the strategy, then perception can change it. The honest question, and I ask it of myself first: in how many rooms of our lives are we playing the Machiavellian game without ever having consciously chosen it? Protecting ideas that would grow if shared. Not asking for help we need. Reading a peer’s success as our loss.
One way to experiment: pick one arena this week where the guarding, comparing, or withholding has crept in, and try the sapiens move instead. Share the unfinished idea, ask the question that reveals you don’t know, offer help where there is nothing in it for you. Then watch what it does to the room. Cooperation, like defection, is contagious.
But there’s a catch, and it’s the most interesting twist in this whole story. It is hard to change how we cooperate out there without looking at what is happening in here.
The savanna inside: cooperation among your inner parts
The same evolutionary drama, competition versus collaboration, is playing out somewhere much closer: inside our own minds.
Anyone who observes themselves for a single honest day runs into the same discovery: we are not one self. We are a committee. There is the inner critic, who reviews our performance with a harshness we would never tolerate from a stranger. The pusher, who moves the finish line the moment we approach it. The pleaser, who signs us up for things our calendar cannot hold. The performer, who keeps the show running while quieter parts (the playful one, the tired one, the one that just wants to make something beautiful for no reason) wait backstage, sometimes for years.
And notice what the dominant parts are doing: they are running a Machiavellian strategy internally. They compete for control. They suppress rivals. They monopolize the resources, our attention, our time, our voice, exactly like the dominant chimp monopolizing the food pile. An inner life ruled this way is a savanna: clever, vigilant, and at war.
The alternative is not to overthrow the committee or silence any part. The critic, after all, is trying to protect us from failure. The pusher is trying to secure our future. The alternative is a different position: a place from which we can hear each part without being it. Separate from the critic enough to listen to its concern, take what is useful, and decline the cruelty. Acknowledge the pusher, and also the exhausted part it has been silencing. And then choose, as ourselves rather than as any single voice.
Look at what that actually is. Holding multiple perspectives at once. Letting each voice matter without letting any voice dominate. Forming, out of many competing intentions, a shared one. It is shared intentionality, applied to the inner world. The healthiest minds are not monarchies and not battlefields. They are collaborations. And this may be why the perception shift of the previous section so often fails when attempted directly: it is hard to keep treating other people as collaborators while the committee inside treats each other as rivals. The savanna inside leaks out.
The practice can start smaller than it sounds: pausing once a day to ask, which of my parts is speaking right now? Just naming it (“that’s the pusher”, “that’s the critic”) creates a sliver of separation. Entire methods of inner work are built on exactly that sliver. Nothing needs fixing yet. It begins as pure noticing.
The highest level: a goal noble enough to need others
There is one more level, above the interpersonal and the internal, and it is where everything converges.

Choose Yourself is the intentionality to respond rather than react.
Give Yourself is the direction of all of it toward something beyond you.
These three steps, it turns out, are precisely the arc of this article: become aware of the committee inside, choose the strategy instead of running the default, and then point the whole system at something larger.
That third movement crystallizes in what Six Seconds calls the Noble Goal (Freedman, 2007): a personal sense of purpose, usually expressed as an ongoing action (ignite courage, grow potential, build belonging) that connects your daily choices to what you want your life to serve. And here is why it belongs at the end of this particular story: a Noble Goal is the structural antidote to Machiavellianism. Not a moral corrective, a structural one. A goal that is genuinely noble is, by definition, bigger than one lifetime’s self-interest, which means it cannot be pursued alone. It converts the people around you from competitors into necessary collaborators. It gives your inner committee something worth aligning behind. Even the performance research agrees: In Six Seconds' own study of more than 75,000 people across 126 countries, emotional intelligence scores predicted 55 percent of the variation in success, measured across four dimensions: effectiveness, relationships, wellbeing and quality of life (Freedman & Fariselli, 2016). And when the researchers ran the numbers on which specific skills mattered most, two of the strongest predictors were increasing empathy and pursuing a Noble Goal. In other words: connection with others, and emotional intelligence applied toward meaningful purpose. The science of achievement, followed far enough, exits individualism.
Drafting one is worth the attempt, even a rough one. One verb, one direction: what do I want my ordinary days to be in service of? Then let it work as a filter for a week. Decisions that were agonizing under “what maximizes my position?” become strangely clear under “what serves the thing I’m here to grow?”
Not unlocked. Emerged.
We usually talk about potential the way we talk about a safe: something sealed inside you, waiting for the right combination (the right habit, the right course, the right morning routine) to be unlocked, by you, alone.
Six million years of evolution suggest a different metaphor. Your potential is less like a safe and more like a fire: it exists fully only in the space between. Between you and the people you dare to build a “we” with. Between the inner parts you finally allow at the same table. Between your daily actions and a purpose big enough to need other hands.
The chimpanzees on Ngamba Island could pull the rope together, as long as there was something in it for each of them alone. Only we can pull because the pulling itself, the together, is the point. That is not a nice sentiment stitched onto human nature. It is human nature, and every other strategy is the borrowed one.
Unleash your potential, together. It was never going to work any other way.
